(Report by Police Media Officer Constable Sylvester Wemuru.)
The National Capital District Commission Police Reservist Unit, assisted by police units from the National Capital District Command, continues to “clean up” the city.
The National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent, Silva Sika, said the clean up campaign has seen many physical changes throughout the city.
Mr Sika’s goal to make NCD a clean and crime-free city is now becoming fruitful with the support from the NCDC police officers and NCD support Units from his command.
Metsupt Sika also called on the public to respect the police officers by doing their business of selling their products only at designated market locations in the city. He said that the illegal markets tend to allow for opportunistic crimes to take place.
Mr Sika said police will continue to remove illegal markets around the city because they are not only an eye sore but avenues for illegal activities, such as the sale and consumption of home brew, illicit drugs and petty crimes.
Mr Sika said whilst he acknowledges that people are struggling to make ends meet in the city, the onus is on them to do their business in the right place at the right time.
Mr Sika also added that one of the markets that was identified as an illegal market is in front of the entrance into Kennedy Estate. He said there had been numerous reports of crimes being committed at this location. Yesterday, Tuesday, March 21, a combined team from the NCDC Reservist Unit and the NCD Command closed the market.
