National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Silka says a woman allegedly assaulted by police is alive and well contrary to the false allegations posted over the social media.
A video posted on social media showed two men carrying a woman to the Gordons Police Station, claiming that she died after she was assaulted by a policeman.
Crowds followed them to the police station and whilst on the way burnt a police tent, chairs and tables used by the policemen in the Gordons market area.
Mr Sika said the rumours are totally false and from observations were intended to stir up trouble. He said this is the work of opportunistic people who congregate around the city with nothing to do but cause trouble.
Mr Sika said after being taken to the Gordons Police Station the Station Commander, Inspector Gabriel Kini, quickly rushed the woman to the Port Moresby General Hospital.
According to Mr Sika, the female was identified as Agnes Kewa, 36-year-old, and a resident of Eight Mile. She is from Pangia in the Southern Highlands Province.
The victim informed police that she has underlying medical issues, including TB, and had collapsed on the morning of Tuesday June 20.
Mr Sika said this matter is being looked into by police. Witnesses are being interviewed and CCTV footage is being obtained to ascertain what happened that day. He said appropriate action will be taken. Also, suspects who burnt down the police tent, chairs and tables will also be identified and charged.
