PEOPLE RESIDING AT THE CONDEMNED WORKS COMPOUND TO VACATE THE AREA BEFORE EVICTION.

People residing at the Four Mile works compound area are advised to vacate the area before the police carry out evictions as per directives from the National Capital District Health Authority, which has served a condemnation notice to them. The commander of the National Capital District and Central Provinces, acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Turi, who is the only person authorized to allow police evictions in the command, added that police will conduct awareness next week for the people residing there. He stated that since the buildings were condemned and there are many reports of people committing criminal offenses residing there, police will move in to carry out evictions as per directives from the Works Department.

He said that those who are looking after animals, like pigs, inside that yard are advised to remove them, or the NCDC enforcement team will move in and have them removed.

Commander Turi, while stressing the areas where the police will carry out evictions, also added that Eight Mile is another area where the police will start conducting evictions. He said that those who do not have land titles and are squatting on other people’s land are advised to prepare for evictions that will happen anytime.

He mentioned that his office is working closely with the NCDC and other government departments to identify illegal settlements that are popping up around the city so that awareness can be raised for evictions to take place. He stated that the police have records of crime hot-spot areas and are looking into them to start evicting people.

“When we allow people to be squatters in such areas, they move to the city without planning where to live. When they arrive in the city, they look for free land to reside on and engage in illegal activities like vending in undesignated areas, loitering, and many other unlawful actions that create more work for the police, who are supposed to concentrate on investigating other crimes. We will start evictions and take stock of people who are moving from one place to another,” Turi said.

ACP Turi further added that National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab and Central Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Joseph Salle are working together with their police station commanders to identify illegal settlements around and outside the city. He said they will start taking stock of people residing in these locations so that those who are committing criminal activities can be identified and dealt with accordingly.

He also thanked the public who had been working closely with the police, providing updates on criminal activities happening in and around their area. He said that this is the way forward to make our city clean and safe for everyone residing here and those coming in to do business in our city.

End.
