NCD METSUPT UPDATES ON POLICE SHOOTING AT WAIGANI MARKET

National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab confirmed that the police officer who allegedly pulled the trigger at Waigani on May 25, 2025 killi g a woman , had been formally charged with willful murder and will be dismissed from the force. He said the other two officers were released after a week in custody and may serve as state witnesses; however, should credible evidence emerge implicating them in the death, they will be recalled and charged accordingly.

“As the incoming Metropolitan Superintendent, I wish to give an update on the tragic incident that occurred at Waigani Market on the afternoon of May 25, 2025, where a young woman lost her life in a police shooting. On behalf of the National Capital District Metropolitan Command, I extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this time of profound grief.

“I want to assure the family of the deceased and the public that the NCD Metropolitan Command is fully committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice in this matter. On the afternoon of the incident, three police officers suspected of involvement were immediately detained. The officer alleged to have discharged the firearm has been arrested, charged with willful murder, and will be terminated from the police force,” Metsupt Simatab said.

He said the command understands the pain, anger, and tension this incident has caused, particularly for the family of the deceased and the wider community. He stated that the NCD Metropolitan Command is committed to working openly and accountably to provide answers and closure. He mentioned that the police will keep the public informed of significant developments as the investigation progresses while respecting the legal process. 

Metsupt Simatab also called on the family of the deceased, stating that the command shares in their sorrow and pledges to do everything in their power to ensure that justice is served. He said the police management is here to support them, and they encourage open communication with the management as both parties navigate this difficult time together. 

He also thanked the relatives for their patience and trust in the NCD Metropolitan Command as they work to uphold justice, accountability, and public safety.
