Three defect buses operating along Morata Waigani route were impounded, and the drivers were arrested and charged. According to Waigani Police Station Commander Inspector Bill Werike police will continue to arrest and impound defect buses.
He said there had been complaints of defect buses causing traffic jams that had always been an issue to other road users.
The drivers will be arrested and charged accordingly.
He said that since the Operation Harim Tok is in place police will continue to do their job to apprehend bus driver and impund the defect buses.
He said the public must know that their lives are at risk when getting on such buses that are not registered or insured.
PSC Werike said these are some of the buses causing traffic jams along the Waigani road. He said they would do the same to other route buses that include the Tokaraka and Hohola buses that collect passangers at the Waigani Bus Stops.
The city clean-up operation is underway, and all vehicle owners, including bus drivers and owners, must make sure all vehicles are roadworthy while on the road. We can not change the whole city at one. We have to start somewhere, and that is the start, Inspector Werike said.
Police officers from other police stations are also doing the same at their respective Areas Of Operation and had called on bus owners to adhere to traffic rules. Police had become victims of public criticism when they were doing their job, reminding and informing the same group of people not to do the same.
The festive season operation in the city will be launched soon, and one of the operation orders will be to remove and impound not roadworthy vehicles moving around in the city.
