COURT UPDATE AND SUBSEQUENT EVENTS BEFORE AND AFTER IN THE WAPENAMANDA CONFLICT – FRIDAY 28 DECEMBER 2025

The National Court presided over the HROI number 06 of 2026 this morning at 0930 hours. All four persons summoned by the court Mr Danny Katie representing Yakumans, two court appointed mediators Deputy PA Mr Henry Kapo, CSP Joseph Tondop except Hon Miki Kaeok representing Yangakun appeared in court as ordered. Hon Miki Kaeok was reported sick.

The court issued the following orders after the hearing.

01. All members of the Yangakun and Yakuman tribes are bound by the terms of the peace agreement that was made on the 21 November 2025.

02. For the avoidance of doubt all members of the Itoken tribe are comply with that terms of agreement.

03. Hon Miki Kaeok is to to take all reasonable steps to have the Itoken tribe comply with the terms of that peace agreement.

04. With out excluding the operation of the criminal law, any breach of that peace agreement by any member of the Yangakun, the Yakuman tribe or the Itoken tribe may constitute contempt of court, which conduct can be punished by a fine or imprisonment or both.

05. Time is abridged so that these orders may be entered forthwith.

In essence, the court has ratified the peace agreement signed by Danny Katie and Hon Miki Kaeok in Pom last Friday November 21.

Its applications and enforcement by police of this agreement is binding as of now onwards.

I have now detained Danny Katie at Wabag Police Station after the court hearing. With support from EPG Lawyers we are now filing an urgent motion with affidavit for the National Court to issue a bench warrant to formalise his detention for contempt of Court Order.

Soft approach in this Operations ended at 0600 hours today Friday November 28, 2025 after Yakumans refused to hand in the suspects at 0800 as agreed. They crossed the Itokon border at 0400 hours today and burnt down several bush material houses. As a result both parties went into heavy exchange of fire.

Swift response by Kumul Force under Commander Wagambie Jnr detained 20 men in the fighting zone. They were in possession of weapons and ammunitions at time of arrest. All detainees were taken to Mt Hagen cell awaiting formal charges to be laid.

Yakumans have protested over this action and blocked of the road from Lai bridge all the way to Kumbas market.

The road will be cleared today with use of maximum force. Anybody along the way will be detained, arrested and charged for blocking and sabotaging a national highway.

I strongly recommend to the CoP for Wapenamanda station to be declared a place of interest under the CTA for security force members to take full control of Wapenamanda including middle Lai.

End.
