The NCD Metropolitan Command strongly condemns the recent increase in school fights and violent behaviour involving students in Port Moresby. Such acts are unacceptable, disgraceful, and will not be tolerated.
Schools are places of learning, not violence. Students who choose to engage in public fighting, destroy property, intimidate others or disturb public order will be treated as offenders under the law. I have directed all Police Station Commanders and Unit Commanders to arrest and charge any student or individual involved in school fights where criminal offences have been committed. Being a student does not place anyone above the law.
I also call on School Boards of Management and school administrations to take firm disciplinary action against students who repeatedly engage in violence, including suspension or termination where appropriate, in accordance with school policies and the law. There must be clear consequences for behaviour that endangers others and disrupts education.
To all students, your priority is education. Your parents, guardians and sponsors make great sacrifices and invest their hard-earned money in your future. Do not throw away those opportunities because of peer pressure, social media influence or senseless school fights. Show respect for your parents, your teachers, your school and yourselves.
The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary remains committed to working with schools, parents and the community to maintain safe learning environments. Violence has no place in our schools or our city.
