Commissioner of Police David Manning has commended police in East New Britain provincial command for a swift and coordinated response that resulted in 105 defendants being convicted and sentenced within days of a violent clash.
The Kokopo District Court on Monday convicted 105 defendants following a violent clash involving three villages in East New Britain Province last week.
All 105 defendants entered guilty pleas and were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. The custodial sentences were fully suspended, with each defendant placed on a two-year good behaviour bond subject to strict conditions. Any breach will result in a K2,000 penalty or the suspended term of imprisonment being brought into effect.
Commissioner Manning said the outcome demonstrated what can be achieved when police act decisively, investigations are progressed without delay, and the courts are able to deal promptly with offenders.
“This is a significant result for law and order in East New Britain. It sends an unequivocal message that communal violence will not be tolerated and that those who break the law will be brought before the Courts,” Commissioner Manning said.
“I acknowledge the leadership of the Provincial Police Commander and commend every police officer involved for acting professionally, restoring order and ensuring the matters were properly prepared for court.
“Their disciplined response, supported by the prompt action of the Kokopo District Court, has delivered accountability and reinforced public confidence in the justice system.”
